Oh, Michael. Michael, Michael, Michael. What are the odds, eh?

For decades, Michael Fish was a titan of meteorology. The king of the isobar. But society is a fickle beast—we love reducing someone’s entire life to their single worst day at the office.

For Michael, that day was October 1987. Hours before the worst storm in centuries flattened the UK, he confidently told concerned viewers: “What storm?” Calm down, everyone. Jeez Louise.

You had one job, Mike.

I recently had an admittedly batshit dream where the fallout left Michael forever tarred with the brush of failure.

Unable to get hired anywhere else, he did the only logical thing a disgraced British weatherman could do: he went full Walter White.

Picture it: Michael Fish in a hazmat suit, buying a rusty caravan and cooking up the purest crystal meth the Home Counties had ever seen—all to provide for his family before his inevitable dramatic downfall.

When I woke up, I started thinking about how one split-second mistake can completely rewrite a person’s legacy. It’s been happening since ancient times.

Take Orpheus—and yes, this is the most tenuous segue in art history, but it’s my show, so buckle up.

Orpheus was a generational talent on the lyre, so good he even headlined Jason and the Argonauts’ Golden Fleece tour. Then his wife, Eurydice, died from a snake bite.

Devastated, Orpheus journeyed to the Underworld and played so beautifully that Hades agreed to let her leave on one condition: don’t look back until you’re both out.

And what did this absolute bellend do at the finish line? He looked back.

Game over.

The moral? One mistake. That’s all it takes to go from legendary status to history’s biggest “oopsy.” Whether you’re an ancient Greek hero looking back too soon or a BBC weatherman missing the storm of the century.

And that, my friends, is the inspiration behind my most unhinged piece to date.
